Printing Your Booklet | Booklet Design Help
Ever felt puzzled by printing terminology? To help you on your way, we have put together a brief introduction of the common booklet printing terms.

First of all, it's a good idea to decide what size of printed booklets you will need:

A6 Booklets - Finished size = 148mm x 105mm

A5 Booklets - Finished size = 210mm x 148mm

A4 Booklets - Finished size = 297mm x 210mm

Once you have chosen a booklet size, the next step is the design. When sending designs to print, it's important to take into consideration the limitations of the printing process. For example, part of the process requires the booklets to be trimmed to ensure consistent sizing. This means that you will need to account for a cutting area. This is often referred to as the bleed or trimming area.

Commonly Used Printed Booklets Terms
Bleed - The bleed is the area beyond the trim marks. To ensure that the booklet has colour all the way around it is wise to extend graphics and art work into this area. That said, bare in mind that this area will be removed from the final product, so ensure that you do not place anything critical in it.

GSM - Relates to the weight/density of the Trucard material which the booklet will be printed on. All of our printed booklets come supplied on 130gsm GLOSS ART PAPER.

PP - Stands for pagination. This is the number of printable pages in the booklet.

CMYK - An abbreviation for the four colours - Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key (Black). These colours are combined in varying amounts, to produce the full colour spectrum

Copy - This term has different meanings depending on who is using it. It is common for editors or typesetters to use it to refer to all the text, while printers often use to to mean everything that will be printed - art, photographs and words.
